Licensing NerMI

NerMI is a patented framework and software system that converts physiological signals into real-time measures of emotional state and behavioral disposition. Licensing is structured to let partners integrate this capability into their own devices, platforms, and research programs with clear IP boundaries, predictable economics, and defined levels of support.

Licensing Structures

Licensing is tailored around use-case, scale, and regulatory environment.

Evaluation / Pilot License

Time-limited access for technical evaluation, feasibility studies, and early pilots. Defined scope, restricted redistribution, and focused support to confirm fit before scale.

Research & Non-Clinical License

Structured for labs and institutes that need ongoing access to NerMI for studies, validation, and collaboration, with publication and authorship options defined upfront.

Commercial Deployment License

For OEMs and platforms integrating NerMI into products at scale. Terms can include royalties, tiered minimums, access fees, integration support, and co-branded positioning.

Licensing Tiers at a Glance

The specific economics are set per partner, but the intent is simple: align access and cost with value, risk, and scale.

Tier Best For Typical Term Structure
Evaluation / Pilot Technical due diligence, feasibility runs, early product exploration. Short, fixed term; constrained scope; non-transferable; usually non-exclusive.
Research & Non-Clinical Academic and institutional partners running studies or validation work. Annual or multi-year access; publication rights and data-sharing terms defined upfront.
Commercial Deployment OEMs and platforms embedding NerMI in shipped products or services. Multi-year framework with per-unit or tiered fees, minimums, and optional performance-based terms.

How Licensing Works

1

Initial Discussion

Understand your platform, goals, markets, and constraints.

2

Technical Fit & Scope

Align on data sources (PPG, ECG, etc.) and integration path.

3

Pilot / Evaluation

Test performance and feasibility before commercial deployment.

4

License Framework

Define scope, geography, exclusivity, economics, and support.

5

Integration & Collaboration

Reference code, documentation, and optional consultative support.

What NerMI Brings

These are derived from autonomic patterns using methods described in the patent application Systems and Methods for Psychological Monitoring (US 19/227,299).

Negativity-positivity (valence)

Emotional tone (pleasant ↔ unpleasant)

Engagement (motivation)

Approach ↔ avoidance

Readiness (activation)

Arousal, energy, tension

For partners, the outcome is a stable stream of interpretable variables that can be embedded in products or used for higher level prediction such as specific emotions (Anger, Fear, Joy, etc.), mood, and personality (Big Five, depression, cognitive reflection) without turning your engineering team into a physiology lab.

Stewardship

NerMI was developed by Shane R. McClafferty, Ph.D. student in Cognitive & Behavioral Neuroscience at Virginia Tech and is now owned by McClafferty Innovations LLC for licensing.

The licensing model reflects the same scientific principles: clarity, rigor, and long-term stability. The goal is to create partnerships where NerMI functions as an enabling layer inside your products and research programs. Terms are structured so that technical risk, commercial upside, and IP protection are all visible and negotiable.
